BIOPHILIC DESIGN

There is an overwhelming amount of research that shows incorporating nature into our everyday lives is beneficial for our health and happiness. Of course, accentuating your windows to the outdoors is a great way to bring the nature in, but what if your window views are a little drab, and show off a fence, a neighbors trashcan, or adjacent apartment complex instead of a gorgeous sunset view?

That is where Biophilic Design comes in! What is Biophilic design and how do I use it? Well, let’s jump in!

Biophilic Design: the incorporation of nature and/or natural elements into the built environment.

There are a few different ways to incorporate a hint of nature in your home that is both tasteful and effective, and we have some to share below:

  1. Artwork of Nature: This may be obvious, but including beautiful nature photos or paintings throughout your home is a great way to bring the outside in. These of course can be purchased if you find an image from an artist that you love. If you are a nature enthusiast and have a collection of photos you have taken on hiking trips, or a series of birds you’ve sketched, there are numerous ways to show those off in a tasteful way. This is especially fun when you have a memory or personal connection to the images as it can truly make your house feel like a home, and also serve as great conversation starters for guests when they see your beautiful artwork on the walls!

  2. Wallcoverings: As we mentioned in our previous post PAPER TRENDS, wallpaper is back, and with it, some super trendy and fun prints. Bring in the nature by selecting a floral wallpaper, something with leaves, or a with a soft scene. An abstract way to bring the nature in is to find a wallpaper that has a graphic that is based off of the pattern found on butterfly wings, or an enhanced pattern of a leaf. This is a fun way to bring in nature in a way that is not obvious, but is still natural!

  3. Actual Plants: Yes you read that correctly. To bring in Biophilic Design, you can simply bring in plants. A few favorites because of their low-maintenance can include a Boston Fern, Spider Plant, Air Plants, and of course there are so many more! Whenever you are looking for a new plant to bring into your home, make sure to consider if you have any pets or kiddos, and what plants might be harmful to them if eaten. Selecting safe plants will keep everyone at ease!

  4. Circadian Rhythm: This may be a more abstract application, but a golden one. As humans, we all have a natural circadian rhythm. Our bodies are wired to wake up with the sun and relax and sleep with the moon. These natural lighting changes can have a big effect on how we approach our day, and by using lamps in the morning, overhead lights during the day, and lamps and candles in the evening can be a cozy way to align your home lighting with the outdoors, and allow your body to reconnect with it’s circadian rhythm. Interested in learning more about this? Stay tuned for a Circadian Rhythm blog post in the near future!

We hope these ideas spark some interest in incorporating some natural elements into your home. Send us a message at info@spacestylistsco.com, we would love to help you find the perfect balance of nature in your cozy home, especially if your window views aren’t picture perfect!

Cheers!
