`HOLIDAY HOME

The cozy weather is upon us, Thanksgiving a memory and Christmas the next excitedly anticipated holiday. It can be overwhelming to find ways to make your house a holiday home amidst the social gatherings, gift shopping, and daily living. We have a few simple tips to share with you that are fun options to make your home feel ready for the holidays!

What can we do simply and on a budget to make our homes mirror the holiday seasons? Check out our thoughts below!

  1. Scents of the Season: Scents can recall all types of memories for us, everyone has a favorite scent that reminds them of a certain person, place, or memory. During the holidays, reserve some special candles, essential oils, or potpourri that aligns with the holiday. Some ideas might be a cinnamon and clove essential oil mix, or a peppermint candle, or some cedarwood potpourri. The options are endless, but choose whatever feels like home to you, and reserve those scents for the holiday season! Create a non-visual tradition that will give your interiors the next level up, and a special touch that can’t be gathered from photos.

  2. Couch Central: Our couches are typically the centerpieces of our living spaces, making them an ideal space to spruce up with some themed holiday items. Every home will be different on the selected accent colors, but Thanksgiving would be a great time to use a burnt orange throw, some plaid pillows, or even a tasteful turkey pillow (as long as orange works with your palette of course!) Then for Christmas, switch out that blanket and pillowcases for something in the green, red, or cream family, giving a subtle hint to the holidays! Send us an email at info@spacestylistsco.com if you want to pursue this idea but don’t know what fall or Christmas color accent will work best with your home!

  3. Art: Simple and beautiful, do not be afraid to swap out some of your staple art pieces for some holiday themed visuals during Thanksgiving and Christmas. This could vary from tastefully displayed kiddos’ hand turkeys to a painted winter scene. While you can purchase prints of the same size and store them all in the same frame to rotate through the holidays, our favorite approach is finding pieces that have special meaning to you, for example a Christmas painting by a family member or a wood Thanksgiving artwork piece purchased at a craft fair.

  4. Decor: This one can get a little tricky to store, and as a recovering decor-collector, it is very important to have a specific plan in mind before you go browsing the sale aisles at Hobby Lobby or Home Goods. Try to limit yourself to a certain number of holiday boxes, maybe 2 for Christmas, 1 for Fall (grouping Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.) to keep your rotating items under control. This can be a good way to limit your purchases while adding importance and value to every item that makes the storage cut and gets displayed each year with the season.

There is no need to do all of these tips, unless of course you have the time, energy, and desire to! The most important part of the Holiday season is remembering the reason, and spending time with your family and friends, cherishing the memories created and honoring the traditions of the past. We hope these ideas will spark some inspiration and help make your home the cozy and hospitable place you want it to be!

Cheers!
