GRAY - GREIGE - BEIGE - REPEAT
Neutral colors are not quite neutral when it comes to interior trends.
The newest focus on interior trend neutrals are a warm and cozy soft cream. Flashback 5-10 years ago? You would have found cool grays at every corner.
What do we do about these neutrals, and what is the cycle?
Around 15 to 20 years ago, a super warm and gold wall paint was the go-to. Think of something like Sherwin Williams (SW) Loggia or SW Antler Velvet. When we see these deep beiges in current homes, it is assumed the house is dated. But why? Well friends, that is just the way interior trends go.
The next phase was a quick swing in the opposite direction to a cool gray. Something similar to SW Sweater Weather or SW Mineral Deposit seems to be a common theme for flipped homes on the market. A cool gray with white trim was a common go-to.
Then the grey began to phase out, but not entirely. The greige era emerged, with a slight blend of the beige and gray trends. SW Lunar Lite, SW Drift of Mist, and similar colors are making their appearance in trendy designs. This is paired with the current warm and soft creamy colors we mentioned. These palettes are often seen paired with natural finishes like wicker, faux fur blankets, black accents, and pops of pattern.
What is the theme we are headed to next? Will the trend swing back to the warm and gold paints? Or back to a cool gray aesthetic? What if you know your home color isn’t trendy but you love it?
One thing we know for sure is that trends are cyclical, and if you wait long enough, it will come back around. If you want to stay up with the latest trend, and easy solution to navigating the neutral nonsense in the interior world is to opt for walls to be painted white. Get yourself a clean white wall paint, something like SW Alabaster, SW City Loft, or SW Snowbound. Then after you have this blank canvas, cater your interior decorations, throws, pillows, and wall art to the current trend (whether that be your own personal house trend or the influence of social media!). However, if you know you absolutely love beige, or can’t imagine your base to be anything other than a cool gray - EMBRACE IT!! The best designs are those that the homeowner commits to their style, and no trend can hold a candle to that confidence.
