TILE TALK
Tile is such a beautiful interior finish. There are a few main categories of tile, which include porcelain, ceramic, and cement. (Stay tuned for a future blog post that dives into the differences between those!) For now, we wanted to share some of our favorite tile styles, what we think is trending, and what we think is cycling out. These patterns and designs can be found in multiple of the different tile categories. Let’s check them out below!
1. Terrazzo: A tale as old as time, terrazzo can be found in historic buildings and modern designs. Traditional terrazzo is composed of an aggregate sprinkled into the base and sanded down to create a flat surface, with zinc strips acting as the border to the areas where the terrazzo is poured. Tile composition has come a long way to mimic this style, and also allow for a more cost-effective installation. Demolition of tile is also much easier than trying to demolish and remove a poured terrazzo floor. As for aesthetics, we love terrazzo. It is established and can seamlessly incorporate a variety of colors to be the cohesive element to a space. Terrazzo can also look traditional or funky and eclectic depending on how it is incorporated into the space. A forever favorite for sure!
2. Hand-Painted Visual: Think vintage and handcrafted, this manufactured tile mimics the allure of history with tiles that vary slightly in color, creating a custom and hand-painted look. We are seeing this aesthetic trend currently, and we are in love too! There is something captivating about the tile style, and even in a neutral tone, the pattern of the color variation and not-so-perfect edges that draw you in and looks historic and unique.
3. Dimensional Tiles: Cue the luxury, dimensional tiles are a dream! Tile normally has a rigid aesthetic, and the trend of dimensional tiles adds a fun twist to this classic interior finish. The linear look as highlighted above is very popular right now, and gives a whole new feel to the tile. It draws you in, with the shadows and highlights playing in the light, it is sure to be a showstopper. Imagine this tile as a backsplash, with different moods illuminated by an under-cabinet light, the sunshine lighting it from a nearby window, or just as it is shown here, simple overhead lighting. It’s a perfect selection if you want interest and a little variety.
4. What is trending out? Painted pattern tiles. While they are beautiful and fun, this is a trend we see cycling out, as so many builders and homeowners used this tile in Laundry Rooms a few years ago. We still see the value in this design, and know it will come back around! But if you are renovating today, consider a terrazzo, hand-painted, or dimensional tile to stay on-trend. As always, your home needs to be beautiful and function FOR YOU. Not for Pinterest or Instagram likes. We are here to share what is currently popular, but honor the function of your home and your unique beautiful style!
