This client had designed their home in the early 2000’s, and at the time, had the latest and greatest design featuring orange maple cabinets and matching laminate floors, with green countertops and a built-in desk in the kitchen. The empty nesters were ready to give their kitchen a makeover, to achieve a more timeless design to their kitchen, while providing a warm and cozy backdrop for family gatherings.

Keeping seating while allowing for flexibility of the space was an important element considering the growing number of grandchildren. Family gatherings highlighted the tight quarters in the kitchen and created some pinch points.

To resolve this, the angled stove was removed, and the kitchen was squared-off in the corner, allowing for more clearance around the stove. The dishwasher was moved from the right to the left side of the sink so that the open dishwasher was not in the middle of the aisle, and rather right at the end. The refrigerator remained in the same location as it was the best option for their space. The coffee station was moved from beside the sink to a display area where the built-in desk used to be.

The built-in desk in the existing kitchen was a cluttered “catch all” which was re-designed, and now in the new kitchen, keys, phone charging, and clutter all lands behind closed doors or in a drawer to keep the kitchen feeling fresh.

New lighting updates the space, as well as the wallpapered accent wall by the dining table creates a soft but subtle point of interest for the homeowners and visitors. The island was changed from a dual-height design to a single countertop height to help the kitchen feel more open, and provide more usable space for the family.

Updated rug, flooring, and furniture creates a refreshed look that the homeowners were looking for, all while contributing to the timeless neutral design that could align with most any wall color, allowing for a flexible and chameleon design.
