CLOSET CLUTTER

We all probably know the feeling, you are getting ready for a brand new day, you open your closet doors to select a chic outfit to match your happy attitude and then… the clutter of your closet overwhelms you. What to wear? You feel as though you have nothing, no good options to present yourself to the outside world. You try on multiple combinations and settle for something, sigh, and walk out the door.

Sound familiar? Or some variation on a theme? If this is you, your closet clutter might be the enemy. Check out some tips below for a quick refresh help your day go right!

  1. Empty Closet: First step for a closet reset is to take everything out of the closet. Yes, we mean everything. Take out those hanging clothes, remove those shoes, and lay everything on your bed or the floor. This is a great time to vacuum out those dust bunnies that have been hiding and wipe down those shelves that are looking a little dinky.

  2. Update: The next step is as involved or simple as you want it to be! If you’re happy with the layout of your closet, and or the color, proceed to Step 3! If the paint looks a little sad, consider getting a white paint to give everything a fresh coat. This is a great way to brighten up a dark closet that does not have proper lighting and can also help everything in your closet look a little happier. If you have some areas of your closet that the back wall is visible, even with your items inside, consider getting a fun wallpaper to put on the back wall as a fun pop of pattern when you open those doors! You might also consider a new closet organization system, this could be as simple as a new basket, or a pre-made unit that will replace your current shelf/rod ratio. Email us at info@spacestylistsco.com if this is your dream and you need help achieving it!

  3. Declutter: This next step can be kind of tedious, especially if you have a strong attachment to your clothing items. Go through each item that you had in your closet and determine if it is worth keeping. There are plenty of resources out there they can help you dive into the details on this, but a great process is to:

    • have a pile for items that are past their expiration date and need to be thrown away (stained, ripped, ruined beyond repair)

    • a pile for items that are in good condition but you don’t use and can be donated, and

    • a pile of things that you’re unsure about.

The unsure pile, you can put in a box, tape it shut, and if you miss anything in it in the next few months, you still have access to it. But if after a couple months you can’t remember what’s in the box, you don’t need it! Don’t open it and just donate it! No reason to keep extra items to use up space that you could use for something that you truly love.

  4. Refresh and Enjoy: For the items that you want to keep, place those directly back into your freshly cleaned and refreshed closet. We personally love to get matching hangers to decrease the visual clutter of a closet, but this is a great time to determine where you want to store items and sort them as you put them back in their final home. After you’ve gone through all your items, go ahead and take that donate pile within the week. Nothing is worse than having a cluttery donate pile that lingers for months on end. Also find a home for your “Unsure” box and get that taped up and set a reminder on your phone to revisit it at a later date. Last step is to consider placing some essential oils or closet fresheners in your space and close the door knowing you have a clean space awaiting your next visit!

We hope this helps you complete a clothes closet refresh and get you ready for more glorious summer days ahead!

Cheers!
