PAPER TRENDS
We have chatted before on our recent “Grey - Greige - Beige - Repeat” blog post about how design styles go through trends, just wait 10-15 years and you could be on the cutting edge of this “new trend” that really is just a blast from the past. A recent trend we have seen re-surface? Wallpaper.
Recent inspiration photos and trendy influencers make applying wallpaper super appealing: the gorgeous prints in fun colors, popping personality into any space, or the deep moody victorian-esque patterns bringing interest to a cozy room. Many manufacturers are re-designing their wallpaper/wallcovering lines to feature patterns that are more “Future 2024” instead of “1960’s Office” and we are here for it.
It’s now glamorous, fun, and definitely trendy… so if you are trying to decide if wallpaper is the next addition your home needs, here are a few tips and things to consider!
Installation Type: The first thing many people think of for wallpaper is the traditional paper that is applied with a separate adhesive. This is best applied by a professional installer. Nothing is worse than getting a sticky fingerprint on the wrong side of the paper because you are up to your elbows in glue. The peel-and-stick wallpaper product is very popular right now, and can be DIY, just pay attention to lining up your patterns so the overall image looks seamless. There are also removable peel-and-stick that can be renter friendly, just check the reviews on if it truly is removable and consider your local climate and how that might affect the adhesion.
Application Locations: Okay our favorite wallpaper location right now? CEILINGS. This trend reminds us of old castles where the ceiling held just as much glitz and glam as the walls and floors. When did we decide plain white ceilings were so cool anyway?? Things to keep in mind with this application is that if you have popcorn ceilings, those will need to be removed first for an appropriate install. Also consider the size of the room, smaller might be easier, and more forgiving with a bold pattern. When picking a wall location, sometimes less is more. Consider using it above or below a chair rail, on the far wall when you walk in a room to pull your attention to the opposite end of a space, or on the wall behind your anchor piece of furniture.
Resell Value: The woe of many new homebuyers is to buy a home with traditional plastered wallpaper that you find hideous. Wallpaper does not accept a coat of paint very well, so for any DIY-lovers, ugly wallpaper means a whole bunch of scraping is in your future. So what can we do when we want a wall full of pattern and interest, but might sell in the next few years? This would be a great time to invest in some removable wallpaper!
As with every interior home space - it is yours. Make it beautiful to you, because you are living there, and that is what matters.
