HOME PROJECT WINS
A long weekend can spark motivation in 2 different types of people. The first wonder how much social and fun they can pack into their days of freedom. The second have a to-do list that they can’t wait to make to-done. Whether or not you spent this Labor Day weekend relaxing and socializing or getting to work around the house, we have compiled a few tips to help you make those home project wins a reality!
The key to any successful project is the prep work. Our list below are tasks for you to complete BEFORE the weekend begins:
Dream the Dream: First of all, a good project must start with a clear goal in mind. You need to put in the time before the project begins to dream the dream. Decide what direction you want to go, explore as many alternative options as you can, and then commit to your end goal.
Be realistic: A helpful tip for a long-weekend project is to not pick something too large. Inevitably the project will take more time than you anticipate, so give yourself a little wiggle room. If your dream is a large project, divide it into different completion phases.
Have a plan: Once that end goal is in mind, break it down. Are you building a bookshelf? Great! Find plans of the bookshelf you would like to build or draft it yourself. Calculate the quanitiy of wood you will need. Imagine walking through the process step by step, and make a list of items and tools that will help you complete the process. Wood glue, sander, wood-working tools, etc. What color do you want? How much paint/stain do you need? Sometimes running your plan by a friend can help catch any unforseen necessities that will help you make your project a success.
Prepare Fuel: Consider what types of drinks, snacks, and food will be helpful for you during the project. Make sure you have plenty of available water, something with a little caffeine, and a “fun” drink for when you are in the trenches. Simple snacks like trail mix, protein bars, and things that don’t leave your fingers covered in Cheeto dust are ideal for a quick re-fuel in the middle of a project. Finally, think of your large meals. Make a plan for if lunches will be fast food or if you want to have some sub sandwiches on hand to make the lunch break a breeze!
Stay Organized: Gather all of your needed items, preferably in one trip to the store. This should be easy if you followed Step 3 and have a clear shopping list! (Don’t forget the fuel items you thought of in Step 4!) Once procuring all of your needed items, keep them all together. Don’t spread them out or sneak away some glue because you needed it for another task and forget to put it back. This will just leave you frustrated the day of!
That’s it! When the weekend starts, hit the ground running. We hope these tips help guide your next house project, whether it is a quick refresh or a larger project, these steps will help your to-do list get to-done!
