THRIFTY THEMES

Thift stores can have gems of antique pieces and fun finds galore - if you can sort through all the junk. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right?

When you find a thrift store you love with good quality control, unique pieces at every turn, and when everything is a good deal, it can be challenging to sort through what you should bring home with you and what should stay. Since of course, the goal is definitely not to make your home look like a thrift store!

So how do you balance a unique and fun find with a tasteful design?

Here are a few tips and tricks to keeping those inexpensive treasures in line with your home style:

  1. Find a Common Theme: A great way to succeed at eclectic and thrifted design is to find one common theme that all pieces must align with. An advanced approach would be to create a mood board with different colors, textures, and patterns that look glam together and then find a piece that represents the items on the mood board. (Need help with a mood board? We LOVE making mood boards at Space Stylists & Co!!) Another way is to find a common element between the statement pieces. This could be a color, such as all your eclectic pieces have some little accent of green, gold, etc. This could also be a style, such as victorian, traditional, farmhouse, modern, mid-century modern, etc. Grab the items that support your chosen theme!

  2. Make a Statement: If you have a neutral design at home that is fairly mellow, sometimes you can go wild with one piece to really pull the room together. If you do find a neon yellow chair that you can’t live without, maybe find some small neon yellow trinkets, some art with a splash of yellow, or a bowl of lemons to display that will give a tasteful nod and support that glamorous statement item.

  3. Check that Quality: In a world of DIY, it can be super easy to find a sub-par piece and think “I can fix that!”. If you are handy and have an eye for that sort of thing, go for it! There are some incredible DIY furniture flips out there. But if it is your first time attempting such a feat, start small. There are so many stories of a “cheap DIY” escalating to a project that cost exponentially more than what it would have cost to purchase their dream as a new piece. Home is not the place to go big, because you can’t go home, you’re already there.

With every space, if it serves you well and makes you smile, then keep up the good work! An eclectic design can be tricky, but when it is done well it is a cozy, interesting, and engaging space.
